27. Absalom Christmas Jr.-3739
1840 Dooly Co., GA Census, 3rd District, p. 101 list Absolum & Family.1850 Census, Dooly Co., GA; 24th District; Dwelling 793; p. 282 list Absolom, age 45, b. in SC; Epsey, age 64, b. in SC; Charles H., age 13, b. in GA; Absolom J., age 11, b. in GA. [WHT: Epsey is probably his mother; Charles & Absolom J. are his sons; his wife probably died or they divorced.]
1860 Census: York Co., SC, p. 464; Antioch P.O., Family & Dwelling # 147: Absaloam, age 60; Sarah, age 35, b. in NC; Jackson, age 20, b. in NC; Rachel, age 20, b. in GA; Jno.? B., age 17, b. in NC; Susanah, age 15, b. in TN; Mary, age 10, b. in NC; Julia , age 8, b. in TN.
[WHT comments: Other than Jackson, his son listed as Absolom J. in 1850 census, and Rachel, who I think is the wife of Jackson, Sarah and these other children have been confusing. It appears Sarah's age is 35 and not 75; the enumerator wrote his 3 & 7 in a similar way, but after checking the census again, several 3s written on the same page appear the same as the 3 for Sarah. It is possible that the extra children are Sarah's and she is Absolom's 2nd wife and the enumerator gave them the Christmas name.]
1860 Census, York Co., SC; Sharon Valley P.O.; Dwelling 1629 list C. H. Christmas, age 23, b. in GA; the following born in SC, wife, Louisa, age 20, & 2 children: Jno. G. age 2; Sarah B., age 7 mo.
Two of Absolum's sons, Charles (C. H.) and Absolum J. (Jackson) died in the Civil War.
Sumter Co., SC Courthouse, Deed Bk. QQ, p. 79-80: dated Oct. 7, 1854. Absolum sells to Thomas B. Fraser 95 acres located on Cowpens Swamp, given to him by his father, Absolum Christmas. Witness: J. E. McCoy & Mary C. McCoy. Rec. Oct. 10, 1859.
147. Absolom Jackson Christmas-3741
[WHT: He was living with his father in 1860 York Co., SC Census; A. J. Christmas served in the Confederate Army, Company B, 27th SC Infantry (Gaillard Regt.) Andrew J. (A.J.) enlisted on March 6, 1863; his hospital card, Register of SC Hospital, Petersburg, VA states his date of death as May 12, 1864; he was wounded on May 7 during Battle of the Wilderness; admitted on May 11 to the SC Hospital at Williamsburg, then transferred to Petersburg where he died. His card says he was "Killed in Action", "V.S. through body".]
28. Elizabeth Louise Christmas-5748
1850 Census, Sumter Dist., SC, Dwelling # 1452 list Dempsey Boyce, age 48; wife, Elizabeth, 37, and the following children: J. W., age 11; Samuel, 9; Thomas, 5; Townsend, 3 & Elizabeth, 1.1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Lynchburg; Dwelling 249 list Demcy Bryce, age 69, farmer; wife, Elizabeth, 50 & 3 children: Demcey T., 19; William F., 11 & Merrit D., 8. [WHT: In dwelling 250 is daughter, Sarah J., 19, & husband William Tallon, 20.]
[WHT: Some information on Elizabeth & her family was sent to me in 1990 by her gg-grandchild, Mrs. Sarah Harding of Columbia, SC.]
[WHT: I have visited the Wells Cemetery, and have seen the grave markers for Dempsey and Elizabeth.]
155. William Frank Boyce-15677
[WHT: Living with sister, Sally Tallon in 1880 census.]
29. Jerry Ellis Christmas-2679
[WHT -2009: I had originally shown Ira Christmas as a separate child of Absolum to keep track of him; I had no proof that he was his child. However, I suspected he was a child of Absolum or he & Jerry Ellis are the same person. After receiving death certificates for John James Christmas and Ira Ellis Christmas, with both identifying Ira Christmas as the father, I now believe Ira Christmas and Jerry Ellis Christmas are the same person, and will show them as such.][WHT comments: Might be the son of Absolum's first wife. It is also my opinion/ASSUMPTION that the I. E. Christmas listed in the 1850 Williamsburg Dist., SC Census is actually J. E. Christmas; also, his son Jesse is the J. A. W. Christmas listed in the 1860 Census. I think J. E.'s first wife, Eliza, died around 1851 and he married Mary.]
[Below is a Jan. 27, 1999 email to a descendant]
I am the one that probably started this Jerry Ellis & Ira Ellis could possibility be one and the same. First and foremost, I have no proof that Ira & Jerry are the same; nor he is another son of Absolum; nor he really ever existed. I cannot disprove the family story that has been past down to Brenda; an Ira Christmas came over from Ireland and this Ira is probably a grandson.
Before Dot Baker, Brenda Howle & I started kicking around this idea last year, I had the following posted on the web page and in my 1997 workbook:
From a book by B. Otis Prince, titled "John Huggins I of Sea Wee Bay", pages 28, 39 & 105, reference was made to Ira Christmas and wife Elizabeth Baker, daughter, Elizabeth being born in 1836 and her marriage to Henry McFadden Huggins.
I am confused as to why Jerry E. was referred to as Ira as well as his son, Jerry E., was later referred to as Ellis and then Ira E. in the 1900 census. I wrote to Mr. Prince requesting a reference for his entries, but received no reply. I will show Jerry E.'s first wife as a Baker and also their daughter's marriage to Huggins, but I am not comfortable with this without additional proof; the census shows Elizabeth's age as 10 in 1850."
The following is from one of my messages to Prince:
"I know I sound like a worn out record on Ira Christmas, but this is a mystery guy to me. I think he is either another son of Absolum or he and Absolum's son Jerry Ellis are one and the same. Also, I think Jerry Ellis is listed as Ira Christmas in 1850 census; Jerry Ellis also names one of his sons, Ira Ellis. You mention a Ira Christmas marriage to Elizabeth Baker in your Huggins book. This mystery Ira married Abigail Holiday, who was previously married to William Morgan Baker; Ira and Abigail had a son named John James Christmas; John James married Amanda Brown and then Susan Dean; had children by both; John James, Amanda, Susan & others are buried at Wells Cem. Any information on this Ira will be helpful and might solve this mystery."
The last record I have found of Jerry Ellis was 1869, when he sold 96 acres given to him by his father, Absolum. His family is listed in the 1870 census, but he is not; true, he could have died. Living next door to his second wife, Mary, is Jesse, his son by Elizabeth Baker - I think.
Note the different name changes for one of his sons: called Jerry in 1870 census; I. Ellis in 1880 census and Ira E. in 1900 census.
The Ira Ellis Christmas, son of Jerry Ellis is buried at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church in Williamsburg Co., which is not far from Wells Cemetery. In November, I visited Wells Cem.; where Abigill Baker (Abigail (Abigill on headstone) Holiday Baker Christmas) and at least two children of her son, Gabriel are buried. In addition, her son, John James Christmas & wives, and two children of Absolum Christmas, Elizabeth Louise - married Dempsey Boyce, and Mary Jane - m. Wm. Morgan Baker are also buried at Wells. As usual, I took just enough notes at the cemetery to get confused, so I hope to revisit soon.
Based on the 1820/1830 census for Absolum Christmas, there are 1-2 kids missing; could have died or could be Ira.
Sumter Co., SC Conveyance Bk. S, p. 164: Jerry E. Christmas conveys 96 acres to Thomas B. Fraser, for seventy two dollars, dated January 11, 1869. This property was given him as heir to the estate of his father, Absolum Christmas & mother, Elizabeth Christmas, both deceased. This property was bounded on the N. by lands of said Thomas B. Fraser, E. by lands of Jos. E. Browns Est. & W. S. Punch, S. by lands of Jos. E. Browns Est & W. S. Punch, W. by Cowpen Swamp. Witness: A. A. Solomans, W. F. B. Haynesworth. Recorded March 2, 1869.
J. E. Christmas served in the Civil War as a private, 1st (Hagood's) S.C. Infantry; his son Jesse A. W. also served in the same company.
1850 Census, Williamsburg Co., SC list I. E. Christmas, age 34; Eliza, 25; Elizabeth, 10; Jesse, 8; & B. B. Graves (f), 6. [WHT: I think this is Jerry Ellis.]
1860 Census, Williamsburg Co., SC; Murrays Ferry P.O.; p. 337 list J. A. W. Christmas, age 19; M. A., age 28, female; also living at this residence is John McKinsey and family. Dwelling # 585.
1860 Census, Williamsburg Co., SC; Murrays Ferry PO; Dwelling 584 list J. E. Christmas, age 49, farmer; wife, Mary, age 34 & 3 children: Z. E., age 7, female; W. age 4, male; J. E., age 2. J. E. lives next door to J. A. W. above.
[WHT comments: I think J. E., age 2, is actually Ira Ellis.]
1870 Census, Williamsburg Co., SC; Sumter Township; p. 179, list J. A. Christmas, age 29; Margaret, age 32; John, age 9; Ruth, age 8; Job, age 5 Rachel, age 3; Chanty, age 2.
1870 Census, Williamsburg Co., SC; Sumter Township; p. 179 list Mary Christmas, age, 46; Willoby, age 14; Jerry, age 12; they live adjacent to the above J. A. Christmas. [WHT: Jerry is later called I. Ellis in 1880 census and Ira E. in 1900 census]
[WHT - Feb. 2009: Think the following census helps prove Jerry Ellis & Ira are the same.]
1880 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Bishopville; Dwelling 306; ED: 112, p. 30 list George Young, age 24; wife, Zanie, 26 and Ira Christmas, father-in-law - age wrong as it is shown as 6, appears census enumerator forgot to write complete age, before he began writing father-in-law. In dwelling 305 is Ira's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Christmas, who married Henry Huggins.
[WHT: Mary & Margaret are sisters, daughters of Willoughby Parker. Based on the Census info, Jerry could have been born between 1811 & 1816. I have found no record of Jerry after the 1869 conveyance. I do not know what happen. However, it appears he left Mary Parker, and married or lived with Abigail Holiday Baker, and they had John James Christmas in 1869.]
She was dau. of Willoughby Parker; 1850 Williamsburg Co., SC Census list a Mary Parker, age 26. She and Jerry are living next to Willoughby in the 1860 Census. Jerry is not listed in the 1870 Census.
In dwelling 305 is Ira's half sister, Mary Elizabeth Christmas, who married Henry Huggins.
[WHT: The following is from Brenda Howle, via email, 1998, a descendant of John James Christmas & Abigill:]
"The Camden Archives has local papers going back to the mid 1890s-- and in there was an article that said Abigail Holiday was sick and that she was the mother of Doc G. J. Baker. In addition, I checked the State Archives for a death certificate on G. J. (Gabriel Jones) Baker but the Informant said "Don't Know" in parent info -- so I checked that of Irby Baker == and there it was -- the name Abigail Holiday added." Her headstone identifies her as Abigail Baker."[WHT: visited Wells Cem. on Nov. 4, 1998 with Charles Farmer; actual headstone spells her name as Abigill Baker; DOB & DOD correct as I have shown, but have question about her DOB; 1850 Sumter Co., SC census shows her to be 24 years old, indicating DOB as 1826; she is shown with William Baker, age 50 & following children: William Morgan Baker, 20; James H.; John W. 9; Christopher, 4; Mary A., & male infant, 3 mo. The last 3-4 children could be by Abigill; I do not know when Mary Prescott died.]

Jesse's name appears as T. H. Baker in Sumter Banner's announcement of his marriage to Martha. In working with Dot Baker to connect her ancestor, Martha Christmas that married a Jesse H. Baker, we quickly thought that the T. H. Baker was her Jesse Baker. After determining Mary Ann Baker, Jesse's sister, married Hiram Seymour, and Martha & Jesse were married at their home, we felt our assumption was correct.
[WHT: Dot Baker, a descendant, is the source for descendants of Jesse and Martha.]
Dates of birth & death for Martha & Jesse from family Bible of son, William E., this information is from Dot Baker, sent to her by Jewelle Hendrix, both descendants; this Bible also shows Martha's middle initial as A; one of her sons, Willie, names his daughter Martha Amanda.
Following is from Dot Baker, Sept. 6, 1999: Herbert, I have a feeling Martha Christmas is probably buried at Willow Swamp, or one of the nearby cemeteries in Norway or Bamburg. I want to check further on next trip to SC. Jesse lived in Norway, after his marriage to Rachel Young; but he could have lived in Bamburg or surrounding area before marriage. Ralph, Jesse's younger brother was living in Bamburg before moving to TX. Jesse is buried at Willow Swamp (as are a number of his children). There are some spaces nearby that could be several unmarked graves. We know that Willie and Clarence are buried in the plot. Could be a grave there for Martha.
[WHT: Name appears as T. H. in newspaper, but based on some information from Dot Baker, I think he is Jesse Hinton Baker; married at the home of his sister, Mary Ann Baker, who married Hiram Seymour; he taught school in Mayesville, SC.]1860 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Manchester P.O.; Dwelling 1012, p. 127 list Jesse H.
