47. Henry Daniel Copeland-3261


[WHT: Some information on Daniel and his children was sent to me by his descendent, Dorothy Lee Alexander; Nov. 5, 1990.]

[WHT: Dwayne Copeland's information, September 2003: Daniel moved to Neshoba, MS in 1860; was in Civil War, Confederate Army, Mississippi Regiment. WHT: I've not been able to find Henry Daniel in the 1860-70 census.]

Her three children were list in 1850 Darlington SC census in household of g-father, Stephen Daniels.

1880 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mt. Clio; Dwelling 27; ED: 119, p. 4 list Dorothy McCoy, age 60, farmer & 3 children: William B. F., 18; Amelia, 16 & Susan, 21.

[WHT: Charles Farmer is source of descendants for Dolly & Benjamin McCoy.]

Sardis Cemetery is located a few hundred yards from Raccoon and Swimming Pen Roads in Lee County, S.C. (Benjamin served in the Civil War Co. E (S.C.) L. Army CSA).

1900 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Dwelling # 182, p. 2770, Sheet B, list son, William R (looks like L in census) as head of household, b. Aug. 1862, his mother, Elizabeth, March 1823 - widow; sister, Harriet L. Hardin, b. April 1860 - widow, her children, Johnnie R., b. Feb. 1884, Fannie or Francis, Dec. 1886 & Irvin, b. Jun 1889; also listed is sister, Mary A. Christmas, b. Jan 1858 - widow. Census shows Elizabeth had 5 children and 4 living.

1860 Census, Sumter Dist., SC; Mayesville; Dwelling 430 list John Prescott, age 34, farmer; wife, Elizabeth J., 36 and 3 children: Meary Anne, 4; Jane, 2 and unnamed female infant, age 5 mo. Census taken in August.

Jonathan served in Civil War Co. E enlisted as Pvt. 26 Mar 1862 in Camden SC; transferred to 6th SC-furlough 31 Oct 1862-discharged 12 Jan 1863.

1880 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mt. Clio; Dwelling 74, Family 80; ED: 119, p. 9 list John Prescott, age 55, farmer; wife, Elizabeth, 57 & 1 child: William R., 17.

[WHT: Married a Christmas per 1900 Census; a Mary Ann Christmas (Jan. 4, 1857 - Nov. 8, 1902) and is buried next to Elizabeth Jane at Wells Cem.]

1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC, Mt. Clio, Mayesville, PO, Dwelling 295 is Lydia, age 45 and children: Anna, 20 & Ellen, 16.

1860 Census, Sumter Dist., SC; Mayesville; Dwelling 432 list John Copeland, age 30, farmer; wife, Mary, 30 and 3 children: Agnes G., 4; William C., 2 and unnamed male infant, 1 mo.

1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mt. Clio; Mayesville, PO, Dwelling 289 list John E. Wingate, age 50; wife, Mary, 42 with following children: Hopkins, 16; Wesley, 15; Manly, 12; David, 9 & George, 6. Also living with them are the following Copeland children: Agnes C., 13; Ella, 11; Anna, 9 & Jno. M., 8. [WHT: I assume Lydia had died, and John married Mary Prescott Copeland, widow of John Marion Copeland.]

1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC, Mt. Clio, Mayesville, PO, Dwelling 291 list Henry B. Smith,age 48; wife, Mary A., (age shown as 88, typing error); Children: William J., 18; Henry L., 16; Alverda, 14; Adrianna, 11; Freeman, 9; Scriven, 7 & Franklin, 2.

1880 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mt. Clio; Dwelling 72; ED: 119, p. 9 list Henry B. Smith, age 52, farmer; wife, Mary A., 47 & 7 children: Alverda V., 18; Furman R., 18; Senvie D., 14; Franklin D., 12; Waltor, 9; Landgrave, 7 & Fanny, 4.

1860 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mayesville; Dwelling 428 list Susan D. Donald, age 22 & 3 children: Nicholas D., 4; John M., 2 & Susan 1. All born in SC, except John, who was born in AL.

1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC, Mt. Clio, Mayesville, PO, Dwelling 294 list Susan Donald, age 38, and 2 children: Nichols, 14 & Hannah, 11.

1880 Census, she and 2 children, Nicholas & Fanny are living with her parents, name is Susan Daniels.

1900 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Mt. Clio; Dwelling 55; ED: 116, p. 4A list Susan Donald, age 66, widow, mother-in-law, had 4 children - 3 living. She is living in the household of M. Reese Mathis, age 47; wife Fannie M. [WHT: probably Hannah M.], 39, married 13 years. Also in the household are the following children: R. Frank Mathis, 20 & M. T. Mathis, 18, both referred to as sons. The children are probably not Fannie's, as she has been married 13 years.

1900 Sumter Co., SC Census, Mt. Clio, Robert, Buelemer, & 3 daughters are listed, names of dau. hard to read; what you see is best guess. Census shows they had 6 children and 6 are alive.

[WHT - Info Only: A Hazel W. Copeland, died 1939, age 70, is buried at Bethany Baptist Church, Lee Co., SC; do not know if this is the same person.]

1870 Census, Sumter Co., SC; Bishopville; Dwelling 301 list Demis Elmore, age 42, farmer; wife, Frances, 35 & 4 children: Wm. H., 16; John E., 13; Tully 12 & Nelson, 4. [WHT: Nelson is probably the son of Derius and Frances.]
