[WHT: From Marlene C. McLean, via email, Nov. 10, 1999.]
I was searching in Alachua Co, FL for anything about Caleb when I noted a choice of: List of Soldier's Families who are Entitled to Assistance from the county of Alachua. The chart gives the Soldier's Name, Age, Wife/Mother, her age, and up to 4 children. So I went there and found this: Christmas, Jerry, Dead; wife, Emily, 25 & dau., Mary, 3. The site notes that this chart was probably written in 1863.Evidently he died in the Civil War. This explains why he received no gifts from his father in 1873 when Nathan was disposing of his property.

[WHT: Received from Tom Lloyd, regarding William A., dated May 30, 2004***
***Herbert,
As I said, it's been a while since I kicked around the Christmas notes. Just as I was hitting the send button, I remembered that Martha was married to a man by the name of William Rogers, who died in the WBTS. In fact, I was told by a cousin, a daughter of my Aunt Mattie Bess, that there was, at one time, a letter written by DJ to Martha chastising her for marrying William. I understand that they were engaged to be married before he left for the war, but she heard word that he had died, and didn't hear anything else, so she married this man and had William by him in 1861. I've heard Aunt Lillie and Florence talk about "Uncle Billy" before. William A. Rogers was the son by Martha's first marriage. As usual, the census taker didn't bother to ask all of the questions.

I returned last week from a fresh trip to Athens, Georgia and the University of Georgia where I did a lot of newspaper research. I went through a lot of the Hawkinsville Dispatch and the Cordele Dispatch. I found Martha Christmas' obit. and am emailing the transcription to you. I went through the Cordele and Abbeville papers looking for DJ''s obit, but to no avail.I transcribed and am sending the affidavits that were included with Martha's pension request detailing her marriage to Daniel in 1865. They aren't perfect transcriptions as some of the writing was hard to understand.

Christmas and his wife in 1876. They were married then living together as man and wife from the year 1880 to the time he sold out in Dooly Co. and moved to Wilcox Co, Ga. we lived within an mile of each other, and were intimate friends, and I know that Mrs Mattie Christmas was the wife of D. Georgia Dooly Co Came before me Mrs. W. L. Coppedge, Mrs. A. J. Davis, Mr. J. P. Powell. All known to me as respectable residents and citizens of Dooly Co, Ga. and worthy of belief, who on oath do _ and says they were personally acquinted with D. J. Christmas and Mattie Rogers previous to their marriage, and that said D.J. Christmas and Mattie Rogers were married in Dooly Co Gg. in January 1865. And lived together as man and wife up to death of D. J. Christmas in January 1924. And that she is now his widow, and has not remarried since the death of said D. J. Christmas, sworn to and subsribed before me this 10th day of Oct 1924 S. D. Hargrove, Ordinary Dooly Co, Ga.
Mrs. W. L. Coppedge, Mrs. A. J. Davis J. P. Powell, Judge S. L. WarrenFrom some cause the Minister who married D. J. Christmas and Mattie Rogers, both of Dooly Co, Ga. in 1865 failed to return the License, and I cannot find any record of the same. I have taken the affidavits of some of the most respectable and reliable citizens of our co. penully knew of the marriage. If necessary I can get others. From what I can learn D. J. Christmas and Mattie Rogers both of Dooly Co. Ga. were married in January 1865 while D. J. Christmas was at home on a wounded furlough. Can get evidence of this fact if necessary. Hope you will succeed in getting her pension. She is a deserving lady.
Yours Truly S. D. Hargrove, Ordinary, Dooly Co., Ga.
