Thought I would let you know that I finally got a copy of James Plowden Spradley's (son of James E. Spradley and Elizabeth Ann Christmas) death certificate and he was my gg-grandfather. My husband and I got the opportunity to meet Ernest & Mozelle Ingram in Unadilla, Dooly Co., GA, on Memorial Day; and they showed us about four cemeteries where some of our ancestors are buried. We've been exchanging info with one another since our return home. Thanks for putting me in touch with them.

John Charles Oates-14884

[WHT: Received from Mark Oates on Nov. 3, 2006]
Hi Herbert,
Yes Robert Franklin Oates was John Charles' brother. He died in 1876 (what's amazing to me is historically this is the year of Custer's Last Stand and the death of J.B. "Wild Bill" Hickok!) with the family moving to Texas following his death.
And Yes, the Charles Oats is John Charles. The one-month old boy is my grandfather Charles Estes Oates. John Charles died 6/7/1889 in Gonzales, Texas. I have a picture of John Charles and Sarah Christmas which I have not digitized yet, but will send a copy when I have. My brother's son, Jason Charles, is the fifth generation of first born male Oates' with Charles in their name.
After Stephen Oates (father of Robert and John C) died, his widow (Elizabeth Shipp Oates) moved the family to Henry Co., Ala. From there, siblings stayed in Alabama (Ephraim, Anna M, Margaret Jane, and Elizabeth Ann), moved to Holmes Co., Florida (Fereby and Senah), or moved to Texas (James Wyatt, Robert F, John C, Stephen Jr.).

[WHT: Received from Mark Oates on Nov. 18, 2006.]
Herbert,
As promised I am sending the descendancy file for JC/SCCO, though it's still incomplete.
I also enclose a photo that my aunt (Lou Anna "Tena" Oates Beck) and brother (Randal) claim to be the happy couple, although my brother admits there is no hard envidence. He has the original, so there will be a better copy in future. I am still "scanner-challenged", and took this with a PDA and apologize for its quality. The file is the Cold facts of people and dates, and does not, of course, capture the human side of their lives.

I seems that John (who is reported to "hate farming") was a school teacher before coming to Texas, where he ended up share-cropping, and died of a heart attack while plowing a field. Sarah and the children moved, first to Kimble Co, Tx and then to San Angelo, Tom Green Co, Tx., where she died.

It's reported Sarah married two or three times after John's death (this was violently rejected by Molly Mae, the youngest), but took back the Oates name after each. The only memory my aunt had of her was being held by her dad to see her in her casket. She wrote, "It disturbed me very much to see Dad cry like that. The funeral was held at Aunt Mollie's house in North San Angelo"

My grandfather (Charles Estes) never really knew his father, and always wanted to know more about the Oates line. He never talked much about his early life, except to say it was very hard. My aunt's books mentions an incident where he traveled to Nacodoches, Tx for an Oates re-union, to see if any of them were related. He came back very disappointed, not having known any of them. My aunt finally made a break through in 1963, two years after his death. I remember him as a very soft-spoken man, with a Stetson hat.

My grandfather married Clara Priscilla Robinson, dau of Benjamin Charnel Robinson and Martha Frances Gossett. The Robinson line goes through William "Choctaw Bill" Robinson back to North Carolina. William Robinson was a wealthy farmer, who came to Texas as a Baptist preacher, and traveled around Central Texas preaching and setting up Baptist churches. He had 14 children between two wives. He gave up everything and died penniless, living with is son Joseph Monroe. His Bible and other books in the the "Rare Books" Department at Howard Payne University (Brownwood, Tx), and there's a tree in
Comanche Co. called the "Choctaw Bill" Oak.

The Gossett's were a family that came to Texas in 1835 from Tennessee. It seems Elijah Gossett knew David Crockett in Tennessee and was one the reasons he came to Texas. It's said that David Crockett camped on Elijah's land on the way to the Alamo. Elijah and his son, Lockridge Gossett enlisted in the Texas Army, but did not participate in the San Jacinto fight. My aunt's book talks about my grandmother listening to Grandma Gossett's stories of living near the Alamo and experiencing the "Runaway Scrape" from Santa Anna's army.

575. William Wyatt Oates-14908

Lived 3 weeks.

150. Charles H. Christmas-3740

[WHT: Charles and family were listed in 1860 York Co., SC census; see father's message. C. H. Christmas served in the Confederate Army as a Private in Company H and C, 17th SC Infantry. he enlisted on Jan. 3, 1862 at Camp Hampton, SC by Lt. Col. R. Martin for 12 months. He died March 25, 1862 at John's Island, SC; cause of death: "died at pillow"; death certificate # 348. His wife, listed as H. L. Christmas, filed a claim for her husband on March 7, 1863. In R. W. Kirkland's SC Dead in CSA Service 1861-1865, he is listed as Charles W. Christmas.]

1860 Census, York Co., SC; Sharon Valley P.O.; Dwelling 1629 list C. H. Christmas, age 23, b. in GA; the following born in SC, wife, Louisa, age 20, & 2 children: Jno. G. age 2; Sarah B., age 7 mo.

[WHT: Receive by email, from Joy Brown, on Jan. 5 & 7, 2001 the following:]
My name is Joy Brown and I am checking to see if you have ran across a Hambright/Christmas in the York SC or Cleveland NC area? Hulda L born Aug. 8 1840 that married a Unknown Christmas before 1863 in SC Their son is listed on Yell Co. 1880 Census "Charles Christmas 17 nephew SC KY SC" the uncle he is living with is Abner Grahson Hambright

My Hambright family moved to Perry and Yell in Arkansas around 1871 after the war. Perry and Yell counties are in the central part of Arkansas I will look in the Perry County cem. book and see if there are any Christmas in it. My Grandfather had a friend that would have been born around 1900 his name was Bill Christmas so I think they probably connected to SC Christmas's.

[WHT: part of my reply: The name Hulda L. adds a little weight that the Christmas she married might be Charles H. Christmas; his wife was listed as Louisa in the 1860 records. Charles 1862 death certificate gives his wife's name as H. L. Christmas. They had children in 1858 and 1860 so it is possible the Charles, age 17, mentioned in the 1880 census household of Abner Grahson Hambright, is their son born, 1862-3. The 17 year old Charles could have been born after his father died on March 25, 1862, and was probably named for his father.]

[WHT: In 2006, while reviewing Absalom Christmas, Jr. York Co., SC census online, I noticed a number of Hambright families. Absalom & family lives in dwelling 147; in dwellings 150, 152, 153, 154, 155 & 156 are a number of Hambright families. In dwelling 154 is Abner Hambright, age 45, wife Suianah, 40 & 6 children: Joseph, 14; William, 12; David R., 10; Abner G., 7 Jno. 5 & Christopher, 3. Based on the information from Joy Brown in 2001, I think the wife of Charles H. is Hulda Louisa Hambright, and the Abner Hambright is her brother.]
