[WHT: I visited Carl Parker & Margaret Richburg, wife of David Jackson Christmas, grandson of Ira Ellis, in Greeleyville, SC on June 13, 1996; also have talked by phone with David & Margaret's son, Joseph Lamar, who lives in Fayetteville, NC. David Christmas died in 1980 and Margaret later married Carl Parker. I had previously sent Margaret & Lamar a lot of information from my Christmas file and hoped they could tie in some times for me. Margaret gave me a some information on Ira Ellis's children and grandchildren. Ira Ellis was called Ellis; they are buried at Mt. Vernon Meth. Church in Cades, SC. Margaret did not know who Ira Ellis's parents were, but said she would check with other family members to see if she could find out.]

[WHT: Below is some information from Brenda Howle, a descendant, via email, 1998:]
"John James Christmas, b. 22 June1868 (on death certificate listed as 1870) -d 12 Jan 1930. Son of Ira Christmas and Abigail Holliday Baker. I have no dates for Ira except some family notes of my grandmother. The gist of what she says is that Ira was the son of Ira who was the son of Ira. The way she wrote this is unclear about who came from Ireland in 1813 and his wife then named Abigail wouldn't let the son go back. I don't know which Ira but one went back and died and was buried in Dublin in 1816." [WHT: headstone has 1869 - 1930]

Brenda sent the following obits on Susan Dean, found at Darlington: Mrs. Susan Elizabeth Dean Christmas, 81, widow of J. J. Christmas, died early Sunday morning after a long illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Christmas of Salters. She had made her home with her daughter for several years.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Burgess Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. R.N.Wells, Methodist minister of Greeleyville. Burial will be in Wells cemetery near Elliott.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. J. P. Christmas of Salters, Mrs. J. Lide Munn of Hartsville; Mrs. O. K. Newman and Mrs. Lee V. Way both of Sumter and Mrs. Guy H. Zirkle of New Market, Va.; one son J. W. Christmas of Fair Port, N.Y.; one brother Joe Dean of Sumter; one step daughter George A. Simpson (It should be listed as Mrs. Gaither A. Simpson) of Mayesville; one step son T. P. Christmas of Charlotte; 33 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. (Horace Rudisill has a notation this came from the 5/11/53 newspaper.

Another obit of Susan Deans is practically the same but also gives this information. Mrs. Christmas was born in Lee County, July 10, 1871, daughter of the late F. N. and Mattie Hopkins Dean. Horace Rudisill put 5/11/53 in pencil at the top of the obit notice.

From Charles Farmer, via email, Nov. 3, 1998: I did have John J. Christmas b.1869 d.1930 buried at Wells Cem. because he married my g-grandfather's half-sister, Susan Dean. She was the daughter of Francis Napoleon Dean & Emmeline Hopkins (my gg-grandmother.) Susan had the following children,: Willie Dean, Annie Dean, Normun "Nonie" Dean; I do not know the father's name. I have a picture of Susan and she is quite attractive.

Here's some information taken from the death certificate of Adella Christmas, d/o Jesse A. & Amerintha Baker Christmas. Adella married William Mance Hopkins. You'll notice Adella's name is listed as "Mary A." Also, you'll notice her mother's name is listed as "Mary Baker" instead of Amerintha or Emma Baker.

She died in Richmond County, North Carolina. Her place of residence was in the township of Wolf Pit. Wolf Pit is listed as "rural".

Her full name is listed as Mary A. Hopkins. She's listed as "Widowed" wife of W.M. Hopkins.

Her date of birth is listed as Sept. 25, 1849, SC, age at time of death is listed as 77 years, 1 month, 5 days. She died Oct. 30, 1926, buried the next day at Mizpah Church there at Rockingham.

Her parents are listed as Jessie Christmas of S.C., and Mary Baker of SC.

Here's the information from William Mance Hopkins death certificate, Adella's husband. He died Jan. 27, 1922 at Richmond County, NC, Twp of Wolf Pit at age of 71 years. He was buried the next day at Mizpah Church in Rockingham. He's listed as a Farmer.

His full name is listed as W.M.M. Hopkins. His father's name is listed as James Hopkins of SC. His mother's name is not listed.

Daniel was co-executor of his father-in-law, Addison Baker's will dated 1878, recorded 1885, Sumter Co., SC.

In son, Wille A.'s obit, brothers John, Benny & Furman are mentioned.

This is great stuff! I have got with my mom and she is getting me the Christmas Bible that dates back to J Daniel Christmas and his brothers and sisters this is what I have gotten back so far.
