1926 Hurricane: The family arrived in Miami, Florida the day of Pauline's birthday, June 9, 1926, from Broxton, Georgia., and immediately took up residence at 1154 NW 73rd Street. In September 1926 the big Hurricane swept over southern Florida. The Christmas family remained at home the day of the hurricane where they had been celebrating Mama's birthday. The wind had been blowing harder than normal that day with intermittent rain showers. It had come to Papa's attention through the Miami Herald that a big storm was likely to arrive some time soon, so he had been out nailing boards on the south windows and nailing the door shut. That night at around midnight, Mac and Mattie Bess, having left their home just down the block, drove up in their Essex . A neighboring family was also staying over. The woman, her husband away working construction in Cuba, and her four children, were frightened of what might transpire. By this time, the wind had shifted around out of the north and so Papa began boarding up the front windows. Not long after Mac and Mattie Bess arrived, the storm began to strengthen and suddenly a large tree in the front yard came tumbling down. Papa surely recognized that the storm was likely to pull down the wooden dwelling they were in and so the whole gang -15 in all-hopped into the Essex. Just as they pulled out of the driveway, a second pine tree toppled over and landed in the precise spot that the car had been in just seconds before. They continued driving two blocks east to 7th Avenue and two blocks north till they found a more solid structure to hold out the storm. The residents of the home reluctantly let everyone in to wait out the storm which had picked up with even greater fury by this time. Florence and Lillie still remember watching the roof buckle and lift from its foundation as the wind and rain pounded, relentlessly. A pump shack across the street from the house blew apart and bombarded it with planks, knocking out all of the front windows. The folks who owned the house, Papa and Mama and the older children, held mattresse and blankets and pillows up to the broken windows to keep out the wind. By ten o'clock the next morning, the wind and rain had abated, to everyone's relief. Son, D .J., decided to take a drive back to the house to see what damage had been done. He was not aware of the impending Eye of the storm and before he could return, the storm picked up it's ferocity once more. D. J. was reduced to crawling on his hands and knees as the wind would have picked him up and blown him away. A piece of corrugated steel nearly cut D.J. in half as he struggled to return to safety. Around three in the afternoon, the storm finally subsided and the family returned to what was their abode. The roof had been blown to bits, and the poorly constructed walls of the wooden structure had simply collapsed under the force of the wind. Of course, all the personal belongings had been blown over several blocks. A doll was found a few blocks away that had belonged to one of the children. The family lost much of what they had including many of their pictures. Over the years, every time a storm loomed, Mama Christmas would dig a hole and bury the family's personal belongings. With few options for a place of shelter, the family finally managed to find a temporary residence at 1285 NW 79th Street where they stayed until what was left of the house was repaired and made livable once more. Oral history as given by daughters, Florence Bryan and Lillie Hubbard.

Leonora Pauline Pope-5292

[WHT: Thoughts and remembrances of his grandmother by Tom Lloyd.]

Grandma Christmas was known as a soft-spoken woman of few words, a prayerful woman devoted to her God, a thrifty person and someone who enjoyed working in the backyard in her garden tending to the flowers and vegetables. In later years she stayed in a small room added onto the back of the house of daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Bill Bryan, in Volusia County, Florida.

On one occasion she was seen by her daughter-in-law, Joyce Christmas, on her hands and knees in the front yard at 5805 NW 30th Ave. in Miami looking for something that was lost in the grass. When Joyce asked her what she was searching so diligently for she exclaimed that she had "lost a penny" and was trying to locate it.

Janice and Joycee Christmas remembered how Grandma Christmas would come in to say prayers before Joycee's bedtime. She would kneel down and clasp her hands together next to her bed. She was a long time in a kneeled position, for she went through every last child, grandchild and great-grandchild in her family. Janice and Joycee would be long fast asleep before she was finished praying.
