573. Fannie Ellen Oates-14887

[WHT: Received from Mark Oates on Jan. 9, 2007.]
The only info I have on France Ellen Oates (12/2/1867 - 6/3/1928) is from two documents I have. I can find nothing on the Web.

The first is a hand written tree (in my mother's hand) which my brother has. It's in tatters, but he made a copy. She documented what my grandfather told her in 1961, the year my grandfather died. This document lists his bothers and sisters and shows Fannie married to John Lee Otto, son Johnny Otto who married Easter Moody, children: Dr J L Otto and Sue. [I have determined the son was John Leroy Otto].

The second document is from my Aunt Tena's notes (unk date and source). And I quote:
"Their child was Frances Ellen Oates born 2 Dec 1867 in Roeville Community, Henry Co, Ala. She married at least by 1885 to a Mr ? Otto. This is the only data we need on the child since the last child born to this couple was Mollie Maie Oates (Izard).
Then between known dates... in Gonzales Co, Texas--1883 and 1887-- This marriage of Frances Ellen Oates to this Mr. - Otto - Must have taken place in Gonzales Co., Texas, or so I think. What of you?
Then she M: 2nd William Paschall when and where?... We do have the wonderful find you made of the picture post card, with she and her Mother which states she is is Fanny Paschall etc... [Herbert, this is the picture I sent you, but I don't have a copy of the reverse side... yet!]
Then she M: 3rd When and where? Charles J Cary
Letter from Mr. T. W. Kimble, custodian fo Evergreen Cemetery, 4301 Ala. Ave, El Paso, Texas dated Oct 27, 1964...
The is the information I have for you...
Fannie E. Cary (funeral arrangements made by Charles L Cary and John L Otto) Entered [sic] July 2, 1928 Born Dec 2, 1867.
John L Otto Intered August 17, 1931 on marker 1885-1931
James B Otto Intered March 20, 1947 ??? no idea who he is or was
Robert M Otto " 1933
Mrs Mollie E Otto " Jan 21, 1949"
This last three lines have hand written "?" in front of them.
That's it. Why my aunt didn't have the information my mother had is a mystery to me.
Mark

[WHT: Received from Mark Oates on Nov. 3, 2006]
Charles Estes Oates married Clara Priscilla Robinson, daughter of Benjamin Chanel Robinson (a Texas Ranger when he was 16-22 and made many of "cattle drives") and Martha Frances Gossett.
Ben Robinson was the son of William ("Choctaw Bill") Robinson, a rich farmer from North Carolina, who gave it all up to become a preacher. He traveled around Texas establishing Baptist churches. The nickname was given because he also preached to the Indians in the area (who sometimes weren't very receptive). He frequently preached with his Winchester on the pulpit or in a tree near him.

Martha F. Gossett was the daughter of James Lockridge Gossett, son of Elijah Gossett. Both served in the Texas Revolution, but were not part of the San Jacinto Fight (their service was later that year - Sept to Dec 1836). Elijah Gossett came from Tennesee, and was a friend of David Crockett, who supposedly camped on Elijah's land on the way to the Alamo.

583. John G. Christmas-3743

[WHT: This is an assumption that John followed his brother, Charles and Hambright relatives to Arkansas, but I believe it to be true.]

In the 1860 York Co., SC, dwelling 156 is James H. Hambright, age 28; wife, Rebecca, and son James, 1. In 1880 Perry Co., AR census, dwelling 69 is a James Hambright, age 51, wth son, James, 21 & son, Jno, 17; in dwellings 88 & 89 are other Hambrights, all from SC.

1870 Census, Lawrence Co., AL; Courtland P.O.; Township 4, Range 7; Dwelling 291, p. 32 list John Christmas, age 12; Sarah Christmas, 10; Charles Christmas, 7 & George Harris, 12, all born in SC living in the household of Harris Jones, 38, farmer, a black family, all born in AL [WHT: I think this is the same family.]

1880 Census, Perry Co., AR; Casa; Dwelling 67; ED: 122, p. 7A list Jno Christmas, age 20, farmer, born in SC, as were his parents.

John's brother, Charles is living with a Hambright uncle in the 1880 Yell Co., AR census; Perry Co. and Yell Co. adjoin.

Christmas, J. G. Spouse : Sturart, Betty; Marriage date : Jul 16, 1896; County : Yell

[WHT: It appears John & Betty had a son named Charles, born March 13 1898. Betty died, might be due to child birth, and John married Manerva Robinson; maiden name unknown. John then died before 1900, and Manerva Christmas, age 40 & Charley R. or H. Christmas are listed in 1900 census. I have made some assumptions on the families of John G. and his brother, Charles. If anyone can help with these families, and also their sister, Sarah, it would be much appreciated.]

1880 Census, Yell Co., AR; Ward; Dwelling 66; ED: 222, p. 11 list Charles Christmas, age 17, nephew, laborer, born in SC. [WHT: By Charles being called nephew, it indicates that his mother was a Hambright, and sister of Abner. Also, see notes under father regarding Hambright connection; Abner is listed in 1860 York Co., SC census, and his brother, John, might be the Christopher listed. ]
