[WHT: A Bettie Calder dies May 26, 1916 in Moody, Marion Co., SC, age about 40, single; John Christmas is the informant for the death certificate - # 35012; other info: parents are Noah Calder & Jane Barrentine, burial in Hulon Cem.]

1920 Census, Georgetown Co., SC; Andrews Township; Dwelling # 245; ED 72, p 13B lists John L. Christmas, age 50, b. in SC, farmer; wife, Betty, 40, b. in SC, and following children: Hillton 10 & Annie M., 7. Also listed and called stepsons named Jones: Capera 9; Faithful, 6 & Nanell, 1 1/2. [This is odd, census taker could have made a mistake in identifying these 3 children as stepsons OR this could be a second wife named Bettie.]

1930 Census, Lancaster Co., SC; Gills Creek; Dwelling 249; ED: 14, p. 38B lists John L. Christmas, age 64; wife, Betty, 38, and the following children: Hilton, 20; Annie N., 17; 3 stepchildren: James, 18; Faithful, 14 & Enanell, (sp) 11. All born in SC. John is disabled; except for Faithful & Nanell, the others work in the cotton mills.

[WHT - 1999: I could be completely wrong on this, but I "think" this John is the son of Margaret "Maggie" Christmas. I will show John as a son of Margaret, until proven otherwise.]

[WHT - 2009: The death certificate for John L. Christmas shows his parents to be Hanie or Chanie (very hard to read) Christmas and Mag (Maggie/Margaret) Christmas, born in Dillon Co., SC; DOB is March 10, 1885 which I think is wrong, based on census info, he was born around 1870; wife is Betty (can not read maiden name) Christmas; Hilton Christmas is informant. According to family info, the father of several of her children was John Hamer, so that Hanie/Chanie Christmas could be John Hamer.]

South Carolina Death Records, 1821-1955:
Name: John L Christmas; Death Date: 15 Nov 1947; Age at Death: 64 years; Born: 1883; Gender: Male; Color: White; County of Death: Lancaster; Certificate Number: 014228.

868. Lewis Bunyon Christmas-494

1900 Census, Marion Co., SC; Marion; Dwelling 404?; ED: 79, p. 18A list Lewis Christmas, age 25. [WHT: Lewis is listed a black, as many other Christmas were in the 1900 census; looks like someone wrote a B over W.]

1910 Census, Marion Co., SC; Moody; Dwelling 113; p. 6A list Lewis Christmas, age 35, farmer; wife, Betty, age 46 & Carrie, age 11. [WHT: Carrie might be Lewis' daughter by previous marriage, as he and Betty have been married for only 5 years, but not sure; could be Bettie's daughter.]

[WHT: WWI Draft Registration # 1642, dated Sept. 12, 1918 shows Lewis living in N. Charleston, working as a farmer for Morgan Rogers in Marshville, Williamsburg Co., SC; born Feb. 28, 1874; nearest relative is Bettie Christmas in Latta, SC. He was of medium built & height with blue eyes, and dark hair.]

1920 Census, Charleston Co., SC; Second Saint James Goose Creek; ED: 93, p. 28A list Lewis Christmas, age 35, guard at terminal; wife, Leona, age 24, born in AL, and daughter, Leola, 2, born in FL. [WHT: No dwelling or family numbers.]

1930 Census, Charleston Co., SC; First Saint James Goose Creek; Dwelling 168; ED: 11, p. 16A list Louis B. Christmas, age, 46, married 11 years, taxi driver - owner; wife, Leola, 34, clerk in grocery store, & daughter, Leola G., 12.

[Received the following from Connie Shreves on Oct. 24, 2007; this is from his death certificate.]
Lewis B. Christmas; Died in North Charleston, SC on Feb. 5, 1953. His date of birth is listed as Feb. 28, 1883, but the year of his birth was written over. His age was blocked out. However, I do have Feb. 28, 1874 as his birthdate (off his WWI draft registration).
County of Birth - Marion, SC. He had married a Leona Davis and she was the informant.
Father & Mother listed as unobtainable. Apparently, she didn't know much about him. Of course, he may not have known who his father was. He died from a coronary thrumbosis. On October 14, 1952 he had had an operation, because of broken bones in arm. He was struck by a car. His occupation was a Cab Driver (Private). He is buried at Bethany Cemetery in Charleston, SC. Date of burial was 2/7/53. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. was the funeral director.

[WHT: From his obituary, dated Feb. 6, 1953; provided by Connie Shreves.]
Lewis C. Christmas, 73, died yesterday at his home, 709 O'Hear Ave. in N. Charleston, after a long illness. A native of Marion Co., he was a Baptist, formerlly employed as a cab driver. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Leola Davis Christmas; a daughter, Mrs. W. C. Branham of N. Charleston, and a niece and Nephew. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stuhrs.

[WHT: More questions.]
1. The marriage of Lewis & Leona was in 1919, and Leona last name was Gay; Leola was born in 1918 in FL; Leola middle initial is G in the 1930 census; In Lewis' obituary, Leona is referred to as Leona Davis Christmas; obit info probably given by Leona; Davis could be her maiden name, and Gay the name of previous husband. Daughter, Leola G. might not be a child of Lewis, but a Gay.

With help provided by Connie Sports Shreves, I do not think Carrie is a daughter of Lewis. In the 1900 Marlboro Co., SC Census, Bette is living with her son, George Sports, and several of her other children, and Carrie Sports, age 1, is one of them. I have not found any record of Lewis being in Marlboro Co., but who knows. Connie is still working on this, and does not think Lewis is Carrie's father, but not sure. For the time being, I will continue to show Carries as a child of Lewis, but have serious doubts.

2. A North Carolina death certificate, # 13044, Laurinburg Co., for a Rosie Christmas, born July 8, 1899 in Latta, SC shows husband to be Floyd Sweat; father: Louis Christmas & mother: Mary Dorman.
