1124. Permelia Olive Rose-7849
[WHT: Received from Richard M. Flaherty, grandson, March 29, 2003.]
Some new information. "Dolphus" was Adolphus Kennedy Rose. LUCINDA "PERMELIA" REVILLE who married WILLIAM JEROME CHRISTMUS (an "overseer" of a plantation in Camden) was raised in Darlington, SC by her father's sister, Aunt Polly Reville Prevatt, since her mother died at child birth. Aunt Polly was against Permelia's potential marriage to William, so the marriage between Permelia and William was an elopement. One servant was assigned to Permelia and she rushed to the church to tell Aunt Polly about the elopement and got there just as church was turning out. Aunt Polly fainted "dead away" on the sidewalk and, because of her size, it took "six strong men" to hoist her into her carriage. Polly apparently felt Permelia married beneath her--to just an overseer--and didn't speak to Permelia or William for several years--until little Jane (Christmus Graham) charmed her and brought about a reconciliation. Then Aunt Polly sent Permelia and William a servant to take care of the child. My Dad further reports that my Grandmother Flaherty remembered when Permelia and William were sick with the flu and her mother (Roxie, who was the youngest) would ride horseback to take food and medicine to her parents--about a 20 mile ride but no stroll in the park. They died within 3 days of one another and were buried on the same day at (as reported on your website) Brown's Chappell in Richland County, SC, close to Columbia.

I appreciated running upon your website, and last night forwarded the information to my Dad, Claude M. Flaherty, 80 years old. His mother's maiden name was Permelia (Amelia) Olive Rose of Blaney, deceased 1983 and buried in Hamlet, NC.Following is some information from Dad in regard to your listing for ROXIE ANN CHRISTMUS (linked to the picture of Dolphus & Roxie Christmus Rose) that might be helpful for the website.
"Yes, that is my grandfather and grandmother...your great grandfather and great grandmother. (Richard's note: Following is some additional information and fine tweaking in my Dad's e-mail for the genealogist). My Grandmother Rose's maiden name was Roxanne Alice Christmus, not Roxie Ann, though my grandfather always called her "Roxie". Do you note a familiar family name there? (Richard's note: my younger sister in Albuquerque carries her middle name, Alice. My older sister in Wichita maiden middle name is Rose.) Also, William and Permelia Christmus are listed in the data as having only three daughters Jane, Sarah (Sallie) and Roxie. Jane married a Graham and lived to be 100 years old in Rocky Mount, NC. Sallie married a Gladden and lived in Blaney just west of that big old home where my Grandmother reared eleven children to adulthood. I don't think any daughter had other husbands; they did have at least two brothers; I know one was Bammie and the other William (I believe). Bammie was murdered by his son-in-law, who was never brought to justice (In those days you could flee to Georgia and never be heard from again).
Some dates: My grandmother, Permelia (Amelia) Olive Rose Flaherty (1895-1983) was married to my grandfather (of course!), Claude Meade Flaherty, (1893-1953). My dad is Claude Meade Flaherty, Jr.
1125. Boykin Kershaw Rose-7850
1930 Census, Kershaw Co., SC; Wateree; Blaney Town; Dwelling 8; ED 23, p.1A list Boykin K. Rose, age 33, farmer; wife, Almena A., 31 & 2 children: B. Kershaw, Jr., 4 & Myra J., 2; all born in SC. Living next door is James Gladden.
