Sumter newspaper published Sat September 21, 2002 JOHN E. CHRISTMAS BISHOPVILLE: John Edward Christmas, 64, husband of Carol Yvonne Baker Christmas, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at his home. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Audrey O. Christmas Sr. and Nettie Evans Christmas. He was a member of Ashwood Nazarene Church and retired from Central Machine and Welding Company. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Tony Christmas and his wife, Michele, of Sumter; five brothers, Audrey Christmas Jr., Bill Christmas, Robert Christmas, Deleon Christmas, and Earnest Christmas; five sisters, Romelle Huggins, Lela Elmore, Frances Wells, Sybil Walker, and Teresa Stewart; and three grandchildren, Brandy Christmas, Travis Christmas, and Summer Christmas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hebron Christmas; and two sisters, Dolly Gough and Olene Barr. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Ashwood Nazarene Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Hone, and other times at the home, 897 Holman Road. Memorials may be made to Ashwood Nazarene church, 2145 Green Lane, Bishopville, SC 29010, or to a charity of one's choice. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THOMASVILLE, NC: Letha Olene Barr, 55, a resident of 428 Academy Drive, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Kendallville, Ind. Born Jan. 7, 1945, in Lee County, S.C., she was a daughter of Audrey Othella Christmas and Nettie Evans Christmas. Mrs. Barr had been a resident of Spartanburg, S.C., before moving to Davidson County in 1998. She was a pastor's wife, a former teacher and a former nursing assistant. She was a member of Faith Chapel. On June 16, 1963, she was married to the Rev. Albert Barr, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Albert Allen Barr Jr. and wife Kay of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Phillip David Barr of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Cindy Wilson of Thomasville and Mrs. Carlos (Karen) Trincado of Indianapolis, Ind.; six brothers, Audrey Christmas Jr. of Bishopville, S.C., John Edward Christmas, Bill Christmas, Robert Christmas, DeLeon Christmas and Ernest Christmas, all of Sumter, S.C.; five sisters, Mrs. Larry (Romell) Huggins and Mrs. Melvin (Sybil) Walker, both of Bishopville, Mrs. Duane (Lela) Elmore of Hartsville, S.C., Mrs. Buddy (Frances) Wells of Darlington and Mrs. Sidney (Teresa) Stewart of Thomasville; and eight grandchildren, Miss Tiffany Barr, Miss Nichole Barr, Anthony Wilson, Miss Jocilyn Barr, Miss Ashley Wilson, Miss Alyson Trincado, Carlos Trincado Jr., and Miss Letha Barr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Chapel with the Rev. Joe Smith, the Rev. Walter Hedstrom and the Rev. Kenneth Rice officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Inc. funeral home, and at other times at the home. J.C. Green & Sons Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

BOILING SPRINGS, SC-- Ernest "Papa" Christmas, 87, of 202 Blalock Road, Boiling Springs, SC, passed away at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. He was the husband of Vivian Dean Christmas. He was a wonderful Christian husband, daddy and oh! What a Papa. His love for his Lord and family was known by all who ever knew him. He also loved and served his country. I know he would love to say to everyone, "I want to stroll over heaven with you."
Mr. Christmas was a native of Richland County and a son of the late Tommy and Kate Christmas. He was an automobile parts supplier for many years, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Gateway Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Joyce Christmas of Boiling Springs; daughters and sons-in-law, Ernestine and Frank Foster of Campobello, Nan and Bill Prosser of Inman and Ann and Paul Payne of Boiling Springs; eleven grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday, August 1, 2008 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Gateway Baptist Church. Rev. Ray Stuart, Rev. Brian McCall and Rev. Jerry Armstrong will officiate. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the residence. Eggers Funeral Home-Boiling Springs, SC.

Joseph L. Christmas, 82, husband of Carrie Rogers Christmas, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at his home. Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late Jessie Thomas Christmas and the late Catherine Vermell Berry Christmas. Mr. Christmas was retired from Carolina Furniture Works with 48 years of service and he attended Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years; four sons, J.M. Christmas and wife, Sharon, of Sumter, Herbert Lavon Christmas and wife, Jessie, of Gable, Calvin Wayne Christmas and wife, Ann, of Sumter and Bobby J. Christmas and wife, Paulette, of Sumter; a brother, Ernest Christmas of Spartanburg; 14 grandchildren, Becki McDaniel, Denise Christmas, Yvonne Behney, Janet Hardee, Jeanna Greene, Andria Turner, Gisella Lockman, Celeste Christmas, Ashleigh Keister, Calvin Christmas, Gabriel Christmas, Missie Nance, Mark Christmas and Jay Christmas; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Christmas was preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie, Audrey and Duncan Christmas; and three grandchildren, Bobby J. Christmas Jr., Sonya Kaye Christmas and John Michael Christmas. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Elaine Nero and Deborah Cox for their service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers wil be Buddy Christmas, Ernest Christmas, Stacy Edwards, Harry Warren, Thomas Christmas, Eddie Rogers and David Dennis. Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin, Mark and Jay Christmas. Mrs. Marshall, widow of W. Howard Marshall, died Thursday, September 14, 2000. Born in Camden, she was a daughter of the late James E. and Beulah Price Christmas. Mrs. Marshall was retired from Christmas and Christmas Grocery Store and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Leslie Zemp Order of the Eastern Star, a pianist for many years at First Baptist Church Sunday School, the Young at Heart Group, as well as Pindale Nursing Home.

Surviving are her daughter, Jennie Ruth Munn; sons, William Howard Marshall, Jr., Edward Duncan Marshall, Thomas Alvin Marshall; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Leila C. West, Wilma Rowell; brother, Joe Christmas. She was predeceased by brothers, Clarence, Alvin and William Christmas.

Mr. Marshall died Monday, July 7, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late William Howard and Ruth Christmas Marshall. He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church, a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Bethune Masonic Lodge No. 197. He was retired from Kendall Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Gedelle Stokes Marshall of Bethune; sons, William Howard Marshall III of Charlotte, N.C., Troy Windham of McBee; daughters, Pam Marshall of Charlotte, N.C., Deborah Joyce of Columbia; sister, Jenny Ruth Munn of Camden; brothers, Edward Marshall of Camden and Alvin Marshall of Lake Murray.

Sarah Sill Christmas, 74 of Camden, died Tuesday, Oct 14. 1997. Born in Chester County, she was a daughter of the late Henrietta Mobley Sill and John William Sill, Sr. She was a member of First Baptist Church. and retired after 25 years of service from Camden Floral.

Surviving are two daughters; Carol Christmas Greenwood of Camden and Henrietta "Rhetta" Christmas Abaher of Wilkesboro, NC.; son William H. Christmas Jr, of Fort Leavenworth, KA.; a sister, Wilma Rhame of Charleston; brother, Roy Sill of Lugoff; and four grandchildren, John Alan Greenwood of Lynchburg, Va., William "Kit" Greenwood of Greenville and William H. Christmas III of Fort Leavenworth. She was predeceased by her husband, William Herbert Christmas and three brothers, Edward, J.W., and Robert Sill.

Mrs. Rowell widow of Ellis Rowell, died Sunday, May 21, 2006. Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Beulah Price Christmas. Mrs. Rowell was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught the 2nd grade Sunday School Class for approximately 20 years. Mrs. Rowell was also a member of the W.M.U.

Surviving are a daughter, Martha Rowell Magee and her husband, Johnnie, of Irmo; sons, James Travis Rowell and his wife, M.J., of Birmingham, AL, Paul Ellis Rowell and his wife, Debbie, of Lugoff, SC.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister, Leila West of Camden and brother, Joe Christmas of Camden. She was predeceased by sister, Ruth C. Marshall, brothers, T. A., William and Clarence Christmas.

Born in Marion County, he was the son of the late Jesse Travis and Eva Ellis Rowell. He had retired as the manager of Christmas Shoe Shop after 40 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Camden, where he was a former Deacon and had over 60 years as a choir member and was a member of the Men's Quartet. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre. Surviving are his wife, Wilma Christmas Rowell; daugher, Martha Rowell Magee of Irmo; sons, James Travis Rowell of Birmingham, Ala. and Paul Ellis Rowell of Lugoff; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Anne Rowell Gleason of Fork. He was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Rowell Blackmon and Geneva Rowell Marshall.
