[WHT: The question of Arthur middle name being McQuay or McQuade, I do not know the answer. The following is what I wrote another reseacher: For 40+ years, there was a annual Christmas held by the descendants of William Anderson & Arnetia Jackson Christmas, ending in 1991. Some Christmas family members from other lines also attended. When I attended in 1980 and from 1988-1991, it was organized by Nettie, wife of the William Anderson Christmas, Jr. mentioned below, and her daughter, Joanna. Attendance could run up to 150 people, and family members provided Joanna with family information; who died, who was born, married, etc. the previous year. Aunt Falia, who died in 1984, and Aunt Sadie, both children of William Anderson Christmas attended these reunions. My grandmother, Fauline was also a daughter of William Anderson.
Having a computer in 1988, and the Brother's Keeper genealogy program, Joanna gave me the family group sheets to enter. Now, 21 years later, I still working on the Christmas family. From the information given me at the reunion, Arthur's middle name was spelled as McQuade. I have seen it both ways, but considering the source, I continue to spell it McQuade.]

Martha Jane Butler-167

[WHT comments:] The following information on Martha's family was found in a genealogy file at the Dillon library. Her parents were William Riley Butler, born July 1850 in Randolph Co, N.C., and Indiana Rogers, born about 1847, Fork Community, Dillon Co., S.C. Williams's parents were Hickmond Butler and Eliza/Louisa Fields. Indiana's parents were Ebenezer and Celia Rogers. No record as to when William died, but Indiana died in 1884. Both are buried at Calvary Baptist Church, Dillon, S.C. (no markers)

[WHT: Received by email, Jan. 18, 2005:]
My name is Jane Randall and William Riley Butler, Sr. was my great-grandfather. He married Indiana Rogers. I found William in the 1910 census records in Dillon, SC living with his daughter Lizzie and her husband Hugh Gee Barentine. There is no record of him after that census in May of 1910 so I assume he died sometime after that.

The bible also shows their marriage date as 5 Nov 1898, and in Latta.

Lib told us that Arnetie father was a Jackson and her mother was a Turner and that she had been raised by her Turner grandparents. [WHT: comments.] Grandmother Turner was one of the nicest people God ever created. I was very close to her, spent a lot of time with her as a kid. She made the best sour pickles and I got sick a couple times eating too many.

Robert Preston Turner-13885

William Herbert Turner's (May 1990) comments on Turner Grandparents:

Robert and Fauline lived in the following places:

1891-1925 MARION, S.C.; 1925-1931 McCOLL, S.C.; 1931-1932 PETERSBURG, VA.; 1932-1958 ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.; 1958-1959 AHOSKIE, N.C. (few months); 1959-1968 SARASOTA, FLA.

3608. Aline Turner-13887

[WHT comments:] Aunt Aline & Uncle Kelly moved to Sarasota in 1948; Kelly worked with the Post Office. They started a barbecue business with the idea Granddaddy Turner was moving to Florida to run it. Granddaddy decided not to move and Aline & Kelly ran the business for many years.

My Turner grandparents moved to Sarasota in 1959 and enjoyed their last years in Florida; granddaddy died in 1967 and grandmother lived with Aline until her death in 1968.

In the 1950's, Uncle Jack & family (wife, Margie and children: Jackie & Johnnie) moved to Sarasota; they stayed with Aline & Kelly until they could get settled. Jack built a house across from Aline on Conrad Ave; later Jack and family moved to Bradenton. Aunt Nita & Clyde built a winter home next to Aline; they spent part of the year in Salt Lake City & the remainder in Sarasota. Uncle Howard lives in Canada, but he and family spent many winter vacations with Aline.

Over the years, Aline has been a special person to our entire family, always willing to help any of us when in need.

Feb. 2, 1995; very nice day, Annette, Aline and I visited Palm Mem. Cemetery; where Jack, Margie, Kelly & Nita are buried. We spent the afternoon talking about family and looking at many family photos; Aline lent me some of my g-grandparents photos to have copies made. On Feb. 3, we visited Woodlawn Baptist Church in Bradenton; Jack & Margie help start the church; the church had an island built in a pond behind the church; beautiful flower garden and a plaque, in Margie's honor, is under a oak tree. We had dinner with my cousin, Jackie and family; wife Jewel, dau. Sheri and her husband Randy. Very nice evening; it had been a lot of years since Jackie and have seen each other; he has a very nice family, his son Gordon III was working and could not join us.

Aline still makes very good barbecue today; uses oak & hickory wood to cook, very slowly, allowing the smoke to flavor the meat; like eastern NC barbecue; she also makes very good spaghetti sauce. I call Aline bout every week or two; she is a nice, remarkable lady.

[WHT: today, 10:15am, Aug. 27, 2001, my cousin, Jackie called to say Aline passed away about 2:00 this morning. This is one of those life moments, whereby you want to stay in touch with a very special person, but you know her passing is better. Aline and I have talk, about twice a month, for years; she felt she had lived a good helpful life - I agree 100%, she was happy & content with her life, but felt it was time to go. I will miss her a great deal, but am glad she is not suffering anymore.]

Kelly M. Davis-13895

Kelly had a son by previous marriage named Pete; Pete and Aline are close.

3609. Herbert Clark Turner-13883

[WHT comments:] Dad was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, 185 lbs, dark brown eyes, black hair and had a big built. When young, he was a good baseball player, golden glove boxer and enjoyed tennis and fishing. Later in life, he developed a passion for golf, we had many good matches. He was a big help to me in many ways; learning about life, hard work - nothing is free - earn it, right and wrong, and your word is stronger than any written document. Also, he was especially helpful to me in the operation of the child care centers before he died. He was a nice guy, quick to laugh, and always kidding around; just a lot of fun to be with.

The inscription I put on dad's grave marker indicates my love and respect for him:

A GOOD FATHER, A GOOD HUSBAND, A GOOD FRIEND, A GOOD MAN

Lucy Elizabeth Eatmon-13884

[WHT comments:] Mother was about 5 feet 1 inch, 125 lbs., light brown-blond hair, light brown eyes and blond complexion. She was called "Lib" by dad and her sisters and "Lizzie" by Uncle Wood, her brother.

One of the things I remember most about mom was how quick she was to laugh and smile. She was very easy to get along with and fun to be around, but she did have a temper, and it would show if I did not do what she ask or what I promised.

Pauline White-13893

Shorty called August 19, 2006; Polly died about 8:00 a.m. at Pitt Memorial Hospital, from the heart attack she had on August 17.

3610. Jasper Gordon Turner-13888

[WHT comments:] Uncle Jack was born on Waverly St. in Marion, SC. Jack and dad were very close; they remain so after Jack and family moved from Emporia, Va. to Sarasota/Bradenton, FL. When we lived in Hertford, N.C., dad would take us in the state truck to visit Jack. A lot of times Margie would cook, what we called, "Chop Suey." Dad, Jackie, Johnny, Uncle Jack and I would play football or baseball; we were always doing something. This was back in the early 1950's when life was simple and the gathering of family was a special event. I really missed those visits when Jack moved to Florida. Dad thought about moving but he and mom wanted to stay close to their families, who still lived in Rocky Mount.

In the late 1970's, dad was having an addition built on his home in Colerain; Jack came up to help and to do the electrical work for dad. Dad was a great talker and had these builders on a hourly wage basis. Jack watch dad talk to the builders several times during the day, not about the construction but about anything. Jack asked dad what he was talking to the builders about; dad said they were good guys and he just enjoyed talking to them. Jack explained to dad that he was paying these builders X dollars an hour whether they were working on the house or shooting the bull with him. This hit dad like a brick and the only thing he said to the builders after that was "lets go boys."

Uncle Jack enjoyed his move to Florida and was successful in the electrical contracting business. He originally lived on Conrad Ave., near Aunt Aline; later he moved to Bradenton with his home located on a branch of a river. He enjoyed being able to walk out his back door, sit on his pier and fish or take his boat up some of the back waters to great fishing areas. He was a very good man.

3613. Howard Franklin Turner-13891

[WHT comments:] Howard played Pro football in Ottawa, Canada; later he and Phyllis owned and operated several nursing homes; sold around 1980; They divided their time between Canada and Florida, until the last few years - 2003.
