498. Thomas Higgason-5803

[WHT: Received March 9, 2004.]
Thomas Higgason-5803 (son of 167. Thomas C. Higgason-5626) listed as buried in the Thompson Cemetery in Green County, KY.

I have a copy of Cemeteries of Green County, KY, Vol. 1, 1981, compiled by Martha Houk and Judy Froggett and do not find such a listing. Also, this cemetery is not far from where I grew up in Green County, and I have not seen such a stone there. I have been there many times.

I have been trying to find out more about the two Thomas Higgasons above, and they are quite elusive.

In another email, Mrs. Wells suggests since he was an infant, maybe his grave did not have a marker.

173. Richard Christmas-340

[WHT: Received the following from Elaine Copenhaver on March 8, 1999.]
Dear Herbert,
I was given your name as a researcher of the CHRISTMAS family lines. A friend of mine returned from France with a beautiful Bible. This bible gives a few Christmas family marriages, births and deaths. We are trying to locate it family. Apparently, a soldier during W.W.II took this 20 pound bible with him to war. It was so heavy and "gave" it to this family. This large bible is extremely beautiful and in excellent condition, with gold leafing and leather bound.
Most of the Christmas familles named in this Bible were from Mississippi and one was married in Louisville, KY. in the 1850s. You have any Christmas family lines that this might refer me to? I apologize for being so vague but am hoping to insure this Bible goes to the proper families. There are 2 plantations named also.
Hoping you can help me. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

[WHT: Received the following Family Bible information, from Elaine Copenhaver on March 11, 1999.]

174. Henry Christmas-342

[WHT: The following information comes from Ginger Christmas & Philip Norfleet.]

Oct 1836 Madison Co MS Deed Book D p-299 purchased 360 acres from George N. & Lawson Davidson for $7,800 in October 1836. At Madison Co, MS in 1843. As of 1850, was also known as AB, MD. died in 1850 at Tchula, MS. Mentioned as father of Thomas H.; Mary; Mrs. Sue Hinton; Milton; and Dixon all from Hind Co. MS, as heirs in his brother's, Thomas H. Christmas 1859 will at Bolivar Co, MS.

Located the Henry Christmas family in the 1840 census but could find no other Christmas families residing in MS in 1840. William B. Norfleet was not separately listed even though he was still living at the time the census was taken, in the summer of 1840.

The 1840 data is as follows:

1840 Census, Madison County MS - Henry Christmas: 1 Males under 5; 3 Males 30-40; 1 Females under 5; 1 Females 5-10; 1 Females 10-15; 2 Females 20-30.

Presumably the male under 5 is William Hardeman Christmas; the three males 30-40 are probably Henry Christmas, William B. Norfleet and Richard Christmas. The two females 20-30 are probably Ann D., wife of Henry Christmas and Mary E., wife of Richard Christmas.

The 1850 census for MS showed both a Richard Christmas and a William Christmas, but no Henry Christmas. Perhaps Henry was already dead by the time of the 1850 census.

Henry Christmas died in an explosion on a riverboat in 1850 and was married to Ann Dixon. His son was a Dr. and died after 1863. I acquired this from MHS F340 .B61 Goodspeed Publishing Co. Biographical and Historical Memoirs of MS. p. 543. [WHT: this Dr. Henry Christmas died after 1900]

Also living in household is William McNeal, 27, physician, born in KY with son Roger, 3, MS.

Mentioned in David Lawrence Horn's will dated Vicksburg records on 6 August 1840. Richard Christmas and Thomas H. Christmas Execs. Estate of Wm. B. Norfleet, deceased and Wm. B. Perkins Vs John T. Jesse Mann-767

[WHT: The following is from the files of Mary C. Wooten.]
This information was given to me by Philip D. Clem, who is a descendant of Emeline Mann, Jesse Mann was a blacksmith. Jesse Mann must have married Mary Polly Snodgrass after Martha died. This was recorded by Phillip D. Clem. He was not aware that Jesse Mann had first married Martha Christmas and the Christmas family was not aware that Martha had apparently died young. Upon further research, Jesse Mann is in Butler Co. in the 1850 Census with Mary 45 and Jesse 56. Children: Polina age 12, Emeline age 10. Margaret A. age 7.

[WHT: at this time we do not know, outside of G. W. & David, which child belong to Martha and which to Mary Snodgrass. Now this is a big ASSUMPTION; there is a 7 year period between the birth of David and birth of Nancy; Martha probably died during this period and I will show Nancy, Sally, Jesse, John, Pauline, Emalie & Margaret as children of Mary Snodgrass, until new info is found.]
