[WHT: The following was sent to the Christmas Mailing List by Ginger Beatty on June 14, 2000.]

Someone asked about a Dr. Harry Christmas who served in the Civil War and I ran across the following in my papers on that time period.

I found in Memoirs of Mississippi, p. 543-44: "of medicine, and Henry Christmas, A. B., M. D., of Tchula, is a credit to the profession, being classed among the prominent practitioners of Mississippi. He is a native Mississippian, born in Madison County on the 20th of February, 1842, and was educated in Tennessee, at Washington institute and Lebanon, graduation with the degree of A. B. in the class of 1860. He subsequently studied medicine at Clinton, Mississippi, under Dr. Stokes, and then took his first course of medical lectures at New Orleans in the class of 1860 and 1861.

He reached home just in time to join the Confederate army in the spring of the last mentioned year, and enlisted as a private in the eighteenth Mississippi infantry. He was promoted to the rank of Captain and was on detached duty as commissary of his regiment. He served that department until after the battle of Manasas, when he resigned and was promoted to the position of assistant surgeon, in which capacity he remained until the close of the war. He was the youngest assistant surgeon of the army of Northern Virginia.

After the war Dr. Christmas returned to Holmes County, remained there a short time, and then went to New Orleans, where he completed his course of lectures, graduating in the spring of 1866. He then began practicing in Holmes County, and there he has remained ever since, actively engaged in his chosen calling. The Doctor has ever taken an active part in politics, and has rendered valuable service for the democratic party of Holmes County. He represented that County in the legislature of 1880, was one of the foremost advocates in establishing the state board of health in 1880, and his speech before the house on that bill was eloquent and forcible, placing him among the first orators of that honored body. He has since retained his reputation as an orator, and is noted for his readiness to respond with a speech on nearly all occasions. He is in request as a speaker on nearly all public gatherings. The Doctor was reelected to the legislature in the fall of 1883, served another term in the lower house, and was one of the most active members in the legislature of 1884, on the principals of railroad supervision. As a member of the railroad committee the Doctor worked for the best interest of Holmes County and saved her a large amount of money by helping her out of the levee district. He was also a strong advocate in that body for the A. and M. College and I. I. and C. female College. Dr. Christmas still takes a great deal of interest in local politics but is not an aspirant for office. He now devotes his time almost exclusively to his profession and is one of the leading and successful physicians if Holmes and adjoining counties.

He was married in Holmes County on the 29th of December, 1863, to Miss Lucy R. West, a native of Mississippi, where she was reared and educated, and the daughter of James R. West. Her grandfather was Gov. Cato West. To this marital relation were born three children: Mary, wife of Henry Waterer of Yazoo City; Sallie P., a young lady, and James R. W., a young man of seventeen. Socially the Doctor is a Royal Arch Mason, is master of his lodge, and he is also a member of the Knights of Honor and the Farmers' Alliance. He was formerly a member of the grange, and was lecturer of the County grange for twelve years. He is a fluent and ready speaker, stands very high both morally and socially, and there qualities added to his handsome appearance, his kindness of heart and that subtle, undefined power called personal magnetism, exert a great influence over those with whom he comes in contact. He and Mrs. Christmas are members of the Methodist Church.

The Doctor's father, Harry Christmas, was a native of Carolina, his birth accruing in Warrenton, where he spent his youth. He came to Mississippi when a young man, located in Madison County, but subsequently removed to Bolivar County, where he became a very wealthy and prominent planter, owning about two hundred slaves. He was killed in a steamboat explosion in 1850, when only about forty years of age. He married in Jefferson County, Mississippi, to Miss Anna Dixon, daughter of Rodger Dixon, who was born in Mississippi, but who was of English parentage.Grandfather Dixon was a soldier in the English army and was knighted for gallantry and deeds of daring on the field of battle. His family have the coat of arms presented him in honor of his services. Of the six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Christmas, three sons and three daughters all grew up to mature years, but Dr. Henry and one brother are only survivors."
