[WHT: From Sandy & Ray Smith, descendant, via email Nov. 2, 1999:]

Gilbert and Emma were suppose to have another child, the oldest named Mabel but she died in infancy.

Leander left everything to Gilbert and Laura sued to break the will, trial was held out of Carrollton in Marshall, MO. Gilbert ended up winning.

Leander served in the 58th Infantry of Indiana, and was wounded in the Battle of Stone River on December 31, 1862, the wound was to the face, gunshot to the face, to our 4 upper molars and 2 lower molars, and pieces of jaw. The bullet entered under the nostril and exited on the right side of the face at the cheek.

Very interesting the pension file, how he had to fight to get increases in his pension, and fight them when they would decrease it. There are handwritten letters from Leander and Gilbert in the file.

Emma Evans Crank-2146

Middle name of Evans from Ray & Sandy Smith, a descendant.

2409. Mable Christmas-8015

[WHT: From Gayle Kent:]
Herbert, I think this infant buried in Willis Chapel Cem with Leander and Sarah, Gilbert and Emma, and Perry and Dora Christmas is most likely Gilbert and Emma's. The 1890 birthdate fits with their marriage date (Oct 31, 1889). Perry and Dora were not married until 1898. Sarah would have been 60/61 in 1890 so doubtful she was the mother. Agreed? YES
