DURHAM -- Mrs. Jochebed Christmas Locust, 83, of 1006 Lawson Street, died Monday, June 16, 1997 in Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Suffolk, Virginia and the daughter of the late Marcus and Susie Christmas.She was educated in the Warren County and Durham City Schools, having graduated from Hillside High School. She was an honor graduate from North Carolina College for Negroes, now North Carolina Central University with B.S. and M.A. degrees. She did special work in French and Drama at Duke University and also studied on a special fellowship at Tuskegee University. She taught at Little River High School, Northern High School and Merrick-Moore High School. She also taught at North Carolina Central University. She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church where she was a member of the Deacon Board, Susie V. Norfleet Bible Class, Shepard-Williams-Womack Missionary Circle and College View District. She was also a member of the Rosewood Street NeighborhoodClub. She was a longtime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., having served as the second pres ident of the Durham Alumnae Chapter. She was a volunteer with Call-for-Action and Contact Services of Durham.
Her husband, Richard C. Locust, died in 1994.Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in White Rock Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Reginald Van Stephens. Burial will be in Glennview Memorial Park's Garden of Devotion.
Surviving are a son, Lewis C. Locust; granddaughter, Christina Locust; sisters, Henrietta Christmas Pazmineo of New Orleans, La., and Rebecca Christmas Weatherford of Raleigh; brother, Joseph Christmas of Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands.The family will receive friends from7-8 p.m. Saturday in White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville Street. Delta Sigma Theta OmegaOmega Sorority services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Fisher Funeral Parlor.
