[WHT: Received the following by email.]
My name is Joe Bailey Cole, a native American living in London, England, UK, but born in Brownwood, Texas. My mother Lillian Eugene McCullough/Cole died two years ago at the age of 90 in 1999, in Keene, TX, near Cleburne, Johnson County. She was very familiar with our Christmas family heritage, and knew many of her relatives. As a teenager, in the 1960's, I would attend Christmas family reunions, mostly held in Parker County, Texas, but attended also by Oklahoma Christmas relatives. Although we lived in Cleburne, Johnson County, TX, I was not aware of any Christmas relatives in or associated with that county at the time.

My grandmother's maiden name was Nancy Ann Christmas (NOT to be confused with the same name 419, 753), born in VanZandt County, Texas, Oct 31, 1873; died Brownwood, TX, 1945; married William M. McCullough on December 15, 1897 in Comanche, Comanche County, TX. (from my grandmother's Bible, and confirmed on Ancestry.com Texas Comanche county marriage records). They were refugee Southerners from the post-Civil War South, when Texas population expanded rapidly as the Indian frontier collapsed.

I recall Nancy Ann had a brother named Harvey Christmas, sisters named Mary and Sally (sp?), and several other siblings. According to my mother, they left VanZandt county in East Texas in the 1870's and moved west to the Indian frontier counties. The Christmas family was later centered in the area of Mineral Wells, TX, Parker County (county seat Weatherford), just west of Fort Worth. They were almost all Southern Baptists, small landowners or share-croppers, with basic school educations and literate. There were polite jokes about relatives named "Mary Christmas" (Mary and merry are pronounced the same in Texas), and "Mollie Christmas." The counties of Parker, Hood, Johnson, Somerville, Erath, Comanche, Eastland, Brown, and San Saba are all adjacent, and on the 1870's Indian frontier. There are other Christmas families on the Brazos River in coastal Texas, but I don't recall ever hearing about them, and others in Kaufman County, just east of Dallas, but again, I do not recall hearing about them either.

[WHT: Received from Joe Baily Cole on Feb. 7, 2001.]
Benjamin S. Christmas certainly seems to be my great-grandfather for the following reasons which might be of some use to you.

I had a grandmother named Shepherd who was a Cherokee Indian from Arkansas, as told to me by my mother, although she sometimes said Comanche, I think she just got the Indian tribe names confused because of being born in Comanche County, TX. Comanches didn't marry into Anglo-American families much.

I personally remember William Harvey Christmas (1979) as my mother's Uncle Harvey. Moreover, I remember his wife Mellie (1992). They were both elderly when I saw them several times from 1948 to1953. Although elderly for his time, Uncle Harvey was very active, and my mother was very fond of him. He was very deaf. I also remember their daughters Gertrude-2000 and Viola Mae-2003 very well. Indeed, my mother and Aunt Geneva McCullough (see below) were very close to "Trudy" and "Mae" and we visited frequently. They lived in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, TX, but would drive to Cleburne often. I remember Trudy had two sons (John-4609, Harvie-4608) and Mae one daughter, Millie-4596. In addition, I remember their brother Alvin. They also had a sister who died in Oklahoma when I was very young, and I never met her, no doubt Vera Hesper-2001. It is not difficult to remember names like Mellie, Mary, and Millie Christmas.

In addition, I remember my mother's first cousin Rubert-1993, and his wife Jewelle-1997, and Jerry Don Christmas-5134, who was close to my age; cousin Archie-1994 and his wife Inez-1998; and Norma Gene-2018. Note: my third cousin John C-1996, lived on Lake Whitney, in Hill County, not Whitney Hill County, and I visited him there once.

Here are my mothe's siblings from my Grandmother Nancy Ann's Bible, and maintained by my mother Lillian Eugene McCullough Cole, with substantiated annotations by myself in parentheses:

The Family Register of W.M. McCullough (first name William) and Nancy Ann Christmas McCullough, Married Dec.15th, 1897, Comanche County (TX) Births and Deaths: 1) William M. McCullough, b. Dec. 19, 1873 (TX); d. Nov 18, 1918 (great flu epidemic, Brownwood, Brown County, TX, buried Greenleaf Cemetery, Brownwood). Note: William M. McCullough has been traced through the Bean-Darrow Family (<http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sharoner39&id=I869>),

1) Nancy Ann Christmas McCullough, Oct. 31, 1873; died Sept. 22, 1945 (Brownwood, Brown County, TX; buried Greenleaf Cemetery, Brownwood, Brown County, TX)

2) Letha Rella McCullough, Sept. 19, 1898 ; died, July 9, 1961 (born Eastland? Died, rural area near Baltic, SD. The first of my grandmother's inventive names. She was called Sister by her family.) 2) Otto Layvelle McCullough, June 11, 1900 ; died Mar 8, 1976 (buried in Brownwood, but not Greenleaf Cemetery, Brown County, TX. His name is sometimes misspelled as Leville or Layville, and this kindest man in the world, much admired by his community and family, hated his name. To his friends, he was O.L, to his family he was Brother, and to his nephews and nieces he was Uncle Brother. Following his father's untimely death in 1918, he became the head of the family. He was one of the finest men I ever knew, taught me to walk, and became a father substitute for most of the family, the scion of the Christmas-McCulloughs.) 2) Eva Hortense McCullough, March 16, 1902; died May 8, 1983 (Brownwood, Brown County, TX) 2) Geneva Josephine McCullough, Sept 9, 1907 (born Comanche County); died Feb 18, 1965 (Cleburne, Johnson County, TX, never married, no children) 2) Lillian Eugene McCullough, Aug 10, 1909 (born near Indian Creek, Comanche County, TX); died Oct 12, 1999 (Keene, Johnson County, TX. (Note: Her middle name is Eugene from one of her father's brothers, my great Uncle Eugene McCullough of Hamilton County, TX). She was the last of the Christmas-McCullough children to die. 2) William Norton McCullough, July 17, 1912; died Oct 31, 1984 (Brownwood, Brown County, TX; NOTE: his name in the Bible is listed as William Norton when he was born, but Willie Norton when he died, and I believe the former was his birth certificate name, which I will confirm with his daughter Carol Jane McCullough Carpenter of Baton Rouge, LA. I was a pall-bearer at his funeral. He, his wife Aunt Mattie-Lee, and their children were my personal favorites, and I remain very close to Jane, who has visited me in London.) 2) Talma McCullough, Aug 30, 1914 (died, North Miami, FL, 1999, NOTE no middle name, I guess my grandmother had run out of them by then; Talma had the family traced in the 1940's in order to qualify as a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy when she was living in Greenwood, MS, but the records are now lost; there was a David Crockett McCullough grandfather in the Confederate army, from Texas, under General Hood at the Battle of Atlanta.

Marriages:Letha Rella McCullough to Andrew Torkelson (of rural South Dakota, near Baltic and Sioux Falls), March 5, 1919 Brownwood, Brown County, TX. (survived by 3 daughters in South Dakota: Fayella, Francis, and Ihla Mae, all married with children and grandchildren and all living in 2000.)

Eva Hortense McCullough to Jessie Bennett, Dec 19, 1919, Brownwood, Brown County, TX (7 children, one surviving, Betty Bennett Redwine, San Angelo, TX) Otto Layvelle McCullough to Dovie White, July 18, 1925 (Brownwood, Brown County, TX; 1 son Davey, d.2000 in Canton, OH; 1 daughter Joann McCullough Gill, living in Brownwood, TX) Talma McCullough to Thomas M. Blake, June 6, 1921 (I think Brownwood, Brown County, TX; 1 son Thomas Beverly Blake of TN, and 1 daughter Nancy Ann Blake (yes, another), whereabouts or existence are unknown since 1964) Norton McCullough (first name William) to Mattie Lee McIntosh, Aug 16, 1936 (perhaps married in Mississippi, but resided in Brownwood; 2 sons Jerry of Arlington, TX; Charles of Austin, TX; and Carol Jane McCullough Carpenter of Baton Rouge, LA, all living) Lillian Eugene McCullough to Joe [sic] Bailey Cole July 8, 1939 (First Baptist Church, Brownwood, Brown County, TX; 1 son, Joe Bailey Cole, of London, England)

I am trying to locate Bradford Ace Christmas, Mary Theresa Christmas, Candy Christmas, Helen Jane Christmas and Joyce Ann Brown. They own a mineral interest in Madison County, Texas. Christmas, Jr. et al, recorded in Volume 142, Page 177, Deed Records, Madison County, Texas. In this Mineral Deed, Annie L. Christmas recites that she is the widow of B. A. Christmas, Sr. Annie conveys 1/2 of her mineral interest to her son, B. A.
