GASTONIA -- Mr. Howard Preston Whisnant, 93, of 1350 Robinwood Road, died on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of York County, SC, he was the son of the late William Preston and Mary Brown Castles Whisnant. He was a member of the 1931 Graduating Class from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the owner of Howard Whisnant Furniture Company and co-owner of Whisnant-Williams Furniture Company. Following retirement, he was a dispatcher for Gaston County Transportation and most recently enjoyed working with his grandson at Carolina Garden and Farm. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and the longest attending member of the Henderlite Men's Bible Class. He was a 60-year Member of the Holland Memorial Masonic Lodge #668 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the Gastonia Jaycees; Kiwanis Club; Golden Kiwanis Club; Elk's Club; and Toastmaster's Club. He promoted the Lake Montonia Club in Kings Mountain where he was a past president. He has done much volunteer work - Boy Scout Master and Committee Man; worked with Meals on Wheels; entertained at Nursing Homes and Churches with his music. He was a mentor to teenage boys, first at Piedmont Chapel Church as well as in his neighborhood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Timberlake Whisnant and by a granddaughter, Sara W. Roberts.
Mr. Whisnant is survived by a daughter, Ann Whisnant Roberts and husband, Bill, of Gastonia; by a son, William Preston "Bill' Whisnant and his wife, Joan, of Winterville, NC; by a brother, Charles Day Whisnant and his wife, Virginia, of Charlotte; by a sister, Athleen W. Farris of Winston-Salem, NC; by grandsons, Stuart Roberts of Gastonia, Preston Roberts of Rural Hall, NC and David Whisnant of Avondale Estates, GA; six great granddaughters; nephews, John W. Parks of Gastonia, David Parks of Clermont, FL, and John Ward Whisnant; nieces, Joy W. Sparrow, Jean W. Gaston, Mary Alice Thomas, Mary Camille Suttle, Nancy Whisnant, Susie Whisnant, and Lynn Whisnant. He is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, he is survived by many friends, including his doctors, nurses and caregivers at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Covenant Village, especially Melanie in CVICU at Gaston Memorial and Petra at Covenant Village.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Oakwood Cemetery in Gastonia with the Reverend Dr. David Stoker and the Reverend Patrick Perryman officiating. Masonic Rites will be observed. A Service of Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, at 3:00 PM in the Main Sanctuary. The family will receive friends at Covenant Village on Sunday, February 1, 2003 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and also immediately following the service on Sunday. Active pallbearers will be Stuart Roberts, Preston Roberts, David Whisnant, Glenn Sparrow, and Daniel Sparrow. Honorary pallbearers will be the Henderlite Men's Bible Class. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Charity of the Donor's Choice. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia are serving the family of Mr. Whisnant.

Douglas Alan Walker, 62, was born April 20, 1952 in Springfield, Mo. to Oza Mae (Christmas) and William Franklin Walker. He passed away Aug. 14, 2014 in Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Oza Mae Walker, and brother, Greg Walker. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; son, Corry; daughter, Kara and her fiancé, Travis; and sisters-in-law, Gail Walker and Karen Anderson. Doug is also survived by his precious aunt and uncle, Zelpha and Wayne Thomason; niece, Robin; nephews, Jon, Chad, Matt, and their families; and his dearly loved cousins, friends and coworkers.
Doug was a member at Creekside Church of Christ, where he actively served the Lord and congregation. His love for the Lord and others was evident to all. His beautiful spirit and loving heart will be greatly missed.
Visitation services will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at Midlothian Funeral Home in Midlothian. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 with Dalvin Hampton officiating at Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian.
