[WHT: It is possible, this Richard is the son of William Christmas and Elizabeth Ford Jenkins. In the census, his place of birth is listed as SC, I think that should be NC.]1850 Census, Crawford Co., AR; Big Creek; Dwelling 17 list Richard Christmas, age 55, farmer, born in SC or NC; wife Margaret, 50, born in KY & 5 children: Eliza, 18, TN; Elizabeth, 16, TN; Robert, 13, AR; Dice, 17, TN & Daniel, 5 mo., AR. In dwelling 19 is their son Richard, Jr., age 23, farmer.
1870 Census, Sebastian Co., AR; Sugar Loaf Township, Dwelling 166 list Rich Christmas, age 85, farmer, born in SC.

Richard is her gg-grandfather. Richard is listed as 55 in 1850 Census, Big Creek Township, Crawford Co., AR, and as 85 in 1870 Sugar Loaf, Sebastain Co., AR Census; place of birth shown as SC.Their daughter Margaret married John Andrew Jackson Hill about 1847 in Arkansas. They are on the property between Richard, Sr. and Richard, Jr. in Crawford county in the 1850 Census Big Creek Township.

[WHT: It is possible that John Christmas might the father's name. However, Matilda's 1914 death certificate, info given by her brother, William Woodson, gives their father's name as John Phillips.][The following was received by email from Jeannie Hamby in Nov. 1998.]
Herbert I am descended from William Woodson (Wood) Christmas (born 1842) who I have found in the 1850 Grainger Co, TN census. Wood is buried in Harriman, Tn and has a lot of descendents in the Roane County area. Can you connect Wood to any of your lines? My direct line is as follows: Lina Jean (Jeannie) Christmas (now Hamby) b. 1950; Eugene Christmas b.1918; Arthur Christmas b. 1891; Wood Christmas b.1842; Elizabeth is head of household in the 1850 census. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Jeannie HambyIn the 1850 Grainger Co, TN census: Elizabeth born 1813 - head of household, Marridy born 1835; William Woodson born 1842; Matilda born 1846 & Jane born 1848.
In the family of Susanah Watson, Hannah Christmas born 1811 is listed.
In 1982 I corresponded with H. B. Christmas of San Antonio, FL, who's great Grandmother was Matilda listed above. H. B. had a receipt dated 11-4-1834 where John Christmas had recieved money from his father, William in or near Morristown, TN. H. B. reasoned that this John Christmas was husband of Elizabeth and father of William Woodson.

Hello Herbert. Nice to meet you. My name is Debbie and I am a decendant of Cecil Christmas. My grandfather's name was Cecil Christmas. He had a brother named Basil and two sisters, named Merry and Verna. Cecil said his father, William, had come to the US from Canada. We do not know if William was born in Canada, only that he moved to Wisconsin from there. William had married a woman named Flora Vail in Superior Wisconsin. Their son Cecil was born July 21, 1907. Cecil and his wife Grace had 3 daughters. They are Merry, Carol and Joy. Carol is my mom. I've always thought it was clever the way Cecil and Grace named their daughters after something to do with the holiday. I love the fact that they were minor celebrities in our home town, complete with newspaper articles written about them, as children, during the Christmas season. :) My Mom has a scrap book with some of them.My mom does remember that her grandfather William died in 1944. My grandfather's sister, Merry, married a man named Herbert Ronning.
